National Consumer Rights Day: Everything You Need To Know

Every Year 24th December is observed as National Consumer Day with a specific theme in India. On this day the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 had received the assent of the president. The enactment of this Act is considered as a historic milestone in the consumer movement in the country.

This is to note that World Consumer Rights Day is observed on March 15, annually.

History:

At this point the patron Protection Act, 1986 had received the assent of the president. The enactment of this Act is taken into consideration as a historic milestone within the customer movement within the country.

On December 24, 1986, the patron Protection Act was passed. After this, changes were made within the Act in 1991 and 1993.

Significance:

This day provides a chance for people to spotlight the importance of the patron movement so they must make every consumer more tuned into their rights and responsibilities.

Its purpose is to spread awareness to consumers about their importance, their rights, and responsibilities.

The rights given to consumers under Consumer Protection Act, 1986 are Right to Protection, Right of Information, Right of Choice, Right of Hearing, Right of Redressal, and Right of Education.

Major Objectives Of The Act:

The major objectives of this act are as follows:

  1. To promote and protect the rights of Consumer such as Right to:-

    #be protected against the marketing of goods and services which are hazardous to life and property.
    #be informed about the quality, quantity, potency, purity, standard and price of goods or services, as the case may be to protect the consumer against unfair trade practices.
    #be assured, wherever possible, access to a variety of goods and services at competitive prices.
    #be heard and to be assured that consumer’s interest will receive due consideration at appropriate forums.
    #seek redressal against unfair trade practices or restrictive trade practices or unscrupulous exploitation of consumers.
    to consumer education.

  2. To provide speedy and simple redressal to consumer, a quasi-judicial machinery is sought to be set up at the district, State & Central level.

Theme For 2020:

This year the National Consumer Day is well-known with the theme “The Sustainable Consumer’.

We urgently need drastic action to handle the world crises of worldwide global temperature change and biodiversity loss. the last decade of the 2020s is our last chance to limit warming to 1.5c since pre-industrial times, in line with the Paris Agreement and to reverse this trend of wide-scale biodiversity loss.

The consumer movement will highlight the lifestyle changes consumers can make to play their part, and what governments and businesses must do to form sustainability the easy choice for consumers.
